Words to live by – August 9

Our visiting priest for the month of August is Rev. Claire Goodrich-Dyer. She recently preached on John 6’s Gospel story in which Jesus answers his disciples who were looking for signs, like his feeding of loaves. Jesus said, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you…I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Rev. Claire said we live in a world that wants more, more and more of the perishable bread and that is never satisfied. But God provides what we need, not what we want. We hunger for peace, justice and kindness that we can offer and become this bread not by getting but by giving. This is the bread that endures, not the wealth and security we spend so much time trying to build up. God provides the imperishable bread that lasts through Jesus Christ.
