Jesus redefines family in last Sunday’s Gospel from Mark. When asked who were his mother and brothers, Jesus looks around to those following him and answers: “Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
Many of us have felt we had families outside of our parents and siblings – for example, in team situations and in groups striving together for a difficult goal. We are invited to examine our lives in Christ from the angle of being part of his family. Our fellow parishioners are surely part of our family of shared belief, and one like our blood families which we must never let down. We must try not to let Christ down either. The kind of behavior he wants from us is pretty obvious – and in return we are nourished by His unquestioning love, grace and acceptance.
