Words to live by – Gospel of Mark

Rev. Dr. Elizabeth took her sermon from Mark’s Gospel, which makes dire warning of the destruction of the temple and warns: “When you hear of wars and rumors of wars do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, as well as famines…”

She reminded us that Mark wrote this after the actual destruction of the temple in the Jewish wars in 70AD – so it was written in grieving for the loss of the epicenter of the Jewish faith. Jesus said this was “just the beginning” of the end times, the apocalypse which some still believe predict. “There is suffering. War and tragedy are normal,” she said. “But we must not be complacent. We cannot write it off. There will always be catastrophes. But we are never off the hook to care for the needs of others. ”
