Mid-Week Stay at Home Spiritual Care for April 29

As we continue to persevere during this time of Quarantine and Isolation, let us offer to God all that we are thinking, feeling and experiencing. I know we are all struggling. I pray that today’s Mid-Week Spiritual Care will help provide you with hope, strength and comfort that you may need for today, and for any other day that may seem too difficult to bear. God hears our prayers and is with us all, now and always.

PRAY TO LAMENT

Read and reflect on Psalm 69:1-3.

Save me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck.

I sink in the miry depths,
where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
the floods engulf me.

I am worn out calling for help;
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,
looking for my God.

Which words and feelings come to mind for you? You may wish to write these down and see where your mind takes you. Instead of shying away from these, lean into these feelings. Think of the loss of life, the pain caused to families and friends, the cancelled opportunities and loneliness caused by isolation.

You may find it helpful to take an object into your hand as you do this – a piece of scrunched up paper or a stone, for example – and to hold it tightly while you think of these emotions.

After you have spent time lamenting, turn to Philippians 4:6-7.

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Ask God to hear the thoughts and feelings you have been experiencing, and for you to feel his peace. When you feel ready, let go of the object you had in your hand, giving it over to God. The object – and those feelings – will not have disappeared, but God is dealing with the issues it represents.

Holy God, We confess our need for you today. We need your healing and your grace. We need hope restored. We need to be reminded that you work on behalf of those you love, constantly, powerfully, completely. Forgive us for trying to fix our situations all on our own. Forgive us for running in all different directions and spinning our wheels to find help, when true help and healing must be found first in You. Forgive us for forgetting how much we need you, above everyone and everything else. We come to you and bring you the places we are hurting. You see where no one else is able to fully see or understand. You know the pain we’ve carried. The burdens. The cares. You know where we need to be set free.

We ask for your healing and grace to cover every broken place. Every wound. Every heartache. Thank you that you are able to do far more than we could ever imagine. Thank you for your Mighty Power that acts on behalf of your children. We reach out to you, and know that you are restoring and redeeming every place of difficulty, every battle, for your greater glory. Thank you that you will never waste our pain and suffering. We love you. We need you today.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen
